Working Mechanism

  • Split-phase motors come with a single cage rotor and a stator with two windings (main and starting) displaced 90 degrees in space.
  • The main winding has low resistance and high inductive reactance, while the starting winding has high resistance & low inductive reactance.
  • As the current in the two windings is not equal, the rotating field is not uniform. Hence, the starting torque is smaller than the stated starting torque.
  • Just as the motor reaches the speed of 70 to 80 percent of the synchronous speed, the starting winding splits automatically from the main supply.
  • Now, the motor starts running on the main winding only, providing increased torque to perform the desired application.
