Locking Helical Inserts
Locking helical inserts are ideal for installing threaded fasteners by repairing stripped / damaged tapped holes or creating threaded holes in metals, polymers, wood & composite materials. They offer greater strength & productivity, as well as reduced downtime & maintenance costs, as compared to traditional threaded holes. Raptor Supplies offers these locking helical inserts from brands like Chrislynn & Heli-Coil. They are ideal for preventing the loosening / rotational spinout of the attached fastener due to vibration or shock and are suitable for automobile, aerospace, electronics, industrial, military and maintenance applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to choose the appropriate dimensions of a locking helical insert?
The helical insert length should be equal to the desired fastener diameter. If the application permits users to modify the installation hole, they should remember that inserts with longer lengths have greater pullout capacity (harder to pull out). The exact insert length may also vary based on the base material. Hard materials like steel do not need long inserts. On the other hand, for soft materials like aluminium, a longer insert is preferred. In contrast, inserts having wide diameters have superior overall torque-out capacity (harder to rotate inside the hole).
How to install a locking helical insert?
- Drill out an appropriately sized hole in the material or remove damaged threading from an already prepared hole.
- Use a tap to thread / rethread the hole in the material.
- Select an insert and use the installation tool to wind the insert into the hole.
- Use a tang break-off rod or punch to remove the tang / prong and allow free passage of the fastener. Large-sized holes or spark plug inserts require long nose pliers to bend the tang in & out alternately until the tang breaks free.
- Fasteners can now be installed into the insert.
How to install a key-locking thread insert?
- Drill a hole according to the required application.
- Tap the drilled hole and wind the insert into the hole.
- Drive the key into the material using the installation tool & / or hammer.
Can locking helical inserts be removed after installation?
Yes, some inserts can be removed using removal tools that unwind them in the direction opposite to that used during installation. Key locking inserts or rock solid inserts can be removed by bending the locking keys out of the material and using a winding tool to remove the insert out of the base material. Users should note that locking helical inserts can be reused after removal but key locking inserts cannot be reused. Locking helical inserts allow assembly & disassembly of fasteners multiple times.
