Working Mechanism
- GFCI circuit breakers compare the current flowing through the hot wire to the current flowing through the neutral wire.
- Under normal conditions, the amount of current flowing through both wires should be equal, meaning that the current is flowing along the intended path.
- However, if there is a ground fault, some of the current will be diverted to a ground path, such as through a person's body.
- This will cause an imbalance in the current between the hot and neutral wires, which the GFCI circuit breaker will detect.
- When this happens, the circuit breaker will quickly trip and interrupt the flow of electricity to the circuit, which helps to prevent electric shock.
