Are dual check valves the same as backflow preventers?

Double-check valves (also known as double-check assembly) are somewhere in between a check valve and a backflow preventer. They are usually installed in places where backflow requires to be contained with a one-way valve, but the investment needs to be less than a backflow preventer.
